ANDREW JOHNSTON

Andrew Johnston, Creator & Host of Bitch Salad (Photo by Sylvia Pereira, styled by me.)

Andrew is no stranger to the stage and screen – if you haven’t seen him perform, just go. He is the creator & host of Bitch Salad, a familiar face on MuchMusic’s Video on Trial and he will ruin/enhance your life with Photoshop if you’re lucky enough.

More importantly, Mr. Johnston has a very special place in my heart. He is the sole reason why I’m a stylist today. Most people don’t know this, but without him writing me (a stranger at the time) a simple Facebook private message, I don’t know if I’d be doing what I’m doing. It’s been three years since that fateful message and he’s given me the opportunity to dress the funniest and most talented performers this city has to offer and most importantly, he’s become one of my closest and most cherished friends in the world. (Y’all know how I feel about talking on the phone; Andrew and I had to speak, AT LENGTH, after the passing of one Ms. Whitney Houston. This is true blue love.)

You can catch Andrew on Video On Trial and please follow him on Twitter: @_andrewjohnston

DARRIN ROSE

Darrin Rose, Comedian & Host of Match Game

You may recognize Darrin as Bill from Mr. D or as a regular cast member on MuchMusic’s Video on Trial. He’s also a four-time Canadian Comedy Award nominee AND has taken his stand-up act to comedy clubs everywhere. You can now add his brand-new gig as host of The Comedy Network’s Match Game, along with regulars, Debra DiGiovanni & Sean Cullen, to his resume. He COULD be Jamaican with all of these jobs.

Follow Darrin on Twitter: @darrinrose and don’t forget to tune in for the premiere of Match Game on Monday, Oct. 15th at 8PM. You won’t even have to leave your home for your eyes to thank you on a regular basis!

MARSHALL LORENZO

Marshall Lorenzo, Comedian & Long Form genius

I first set eyes on this delightful creature during an It’s $5 stand-up night hosted by Heidi Brander. Was his accent real? Was this all a part of his schtick? Could I trust him? I left that evening with no answers, just a full heart. Cut to this summer at the Second City Training Center: I’m a student watching the new Long Form improv groups and Marshall takes the stage.  *single blink*  I cannot explain how witty, how sharp, how creative, this gentleman is. (AND HE STILL HAD THE ACCENT!) Please, please, please find him on a stage near you (his next Long Form show is on Thursday, Oct. 18th in the John Candy Box Theatre at the Second City Training Center. And it’s FREE!) and follow Marshall on Twitter for some good chuckles & upcoming show announcements: @extrafirmhold

Guys & gals, the hotness will never end. Here are a few of the foxiest & funniest ladies who need to be on your radar:

Desiree is a pint-sized comedy powerhouse. She’s part of the The Boom, a Toronto based sketch comedy troupe that does a show at The Drake Hotel on the first Thursday of the month. Catch Desiree TONIGHT at The Drake Hotel for the Halloween Edition of the The Boom Show – starts at 8PM and follow her on Twitter: @DesireeLavoy

LAURA CILEVITZ

Photo by Sylvia Pereira, Styling by me!

Laura is one of the sexiest & raunchiest funny ladies out there. She got her start in comedy as a sketch comedian in the Canadian Comedy Award winning sketch troupe The Sketchersons, and is the winner of The Tim Sims Encouragement fund and Cream Of Comedy award with her sketch duo 7 Minutes In Heaven. Laura also dabbles in stand up comedy, with a motto she lives by which is “If something is too embarrassing to say to someone one on one, then it’s perfect to tell on stage to a room full of people”. She currently makes a living eating food on camera as a commercial actor, is all over Much Music as a juror on Video On Trial, and continues to work as a comedic actress and writer on stage and television. When Laura isn’t acting, she is busy eating things covered in cheese followed by anything made out of chocolate. Laura is so excited to be a part of the Match Game panel, mostly because she gets to play the game with comedians she’s always looked up to. Match Game premieres on The Comedy Network Monday, Oct. 15th! Don’t forget to follow Ms. Laura on Twitter to find out about her upcoming shows: @lauracilevitz

JULIA HLADKOWICZ

Photo by Sylvia Pereira, Styling by me (clothing provided by Tabula Rasa)!

Julia Hladkowicz is THE #1 stunna – look at her! Beyond luxe, right??? I’ve seen her do her thing several times at Bitch Salad and she unleashes on the audience.  Your hate on her beauty will fade immediately because she’s so EFFING hilarious; you HAVE to love her. While she doesn’t have any local gigs (unfortunate, TRUST ME), but to anyone out west, please catch her at Yuk Yuk’s between October 18-28. And don’t forget to follow her on Twitter: @juliacomedy

RHIANNON ARCHER

Rhiannon Archer is a raven-haired beauty who delivers hilarious punchlines. Here’s a lil excerpt from her bio: Rhiannon has appeared in many of the hugely successful Nerdgasm shows, has been featured in the very popular Bitch Salad shows, performed both stand up and sketch with the popular Toronto sketch troupe The Boom and The Kids in the Hall’s Scott Thompson. She is a part of the comedy collective StandUp For Your Sisters, performed in the 2010 Brantford Comedy Festival, opened for Maria Bamford, and Todd Glass, just to name a few and was nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award for Best Newcomer and competed in the Seattle International Comedy Competition. Check her out at the Comedy Bar this Friday, Oct. 5th for Picture This! Toronto Edition! And follow Rhiannon on Twitter: @RhiannonArcher

REBECCA KOHLER

Photo by Sylvia Pereira, Styling by me!

Rebecca Kohler is one of the nicest and funniest ladies I’ve ever had the privilege of styling and watching on stage. Honestly, look how cute she is!!! Oh yeah, and last week, she happened to be on a show at the Comedy Bar when Louis C.K. dropped by to close the night. NO BIG EFFING DEAL!!! Catch Rebecca at the East End Comedy Review, THIS Saturday, Oct. 6th at 8:30PM and follow her on Twitter: @becca_kohler

Girls and Boys

Please press play:

I try to spend the bulk of my existence laughing or making others laugh. It feels good, it feels right. Sometimes it’s mean-spirited, but trust, THEY DESERVE IT! I’ve digressed and I apologize. Seeing great comedy and improv is a slippery slope for me; it’s so difficult to reign in my impending attraction to those who perform it. It’s a turrible sickness and I have no idea how to get rid of it or if I really want to. If you’re funny, I want to know you in the biblical sense (or you become my girl crush and we’ll be BFFs! Sorry ladies, shorty (me) will never swing that way but I love ya. *single blink*) I think it shows in the celebrity funny men I love: Seth MacFarlane, Chris O’Dowd, Donald Glover, Louis C.K. etc. Their humour is where my love completely stems from and then an all-consuming crush surrounds me.  Same goes for the funny ladies: Sarah Silverman, Kristen Wiig, Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph. I think getting together for Sunday mimosas with them would be my favourite thing in the world.

And so this begins my week-long focus on my favourite comedians in the great city of Toronto and why you should love/swoon over them too. I would never steer you wrong. I promise you.

MARK LITTLE

You may recognize Mark Little from CBC’s Mr. D., he plays Mr. Simon Hunt. He’s also a member of the Halifax-based sketch comedy group, Picnicface (If you haven’t seen Roller Town, seek that isht out and peep it with your peepers). You know me and my love for voice actors, so you’ve probably heard him at one point or another. What you need to know is THIS dude is one of the funniest dudes in the game, definitely in my top 10. I have seen his stand-up specials and tv shows but it wasn’t until JFL42 this year that I was privileged enough to see his stand-up live.

PICTURE THIS: Toronto. The Rivoli. 2012. I’m in the 2nd row from the front of the stage full of anticipatory glee. On his way to the stage, Mark speaks to the cute blonde in front of me and asks her to hold something (which is revealed to a be a prop once the show begins). Andrew Bush takes the stage to warm us up and Mark comes in to knock us down. He has this endearing quality about him, he just. looks. so. harmless. He’s so unassuming. Then he spits a gangsta rap that peels your face off at the same time you can’t stop laughing. Plus…he does wear glasses. Can you swoon with me, ladies? Trust me – you need to see him live. Please catch Mark headlining at COMICAL: Stand Up Comedy Volume 5 on Thursday, Oct. 11th. He may do his Jamaican accent, but after our chat, he WILL 100% do his Jamaican accent.

HEIDI BRANDER

Photo by Sylvia Pereira, Wardrobe styling by yours truly.

Heidi Brander, is not just the ginger-haired beauty you see above. Oh no…she’s much, MUCH more. Most recently nominated for Best Stand-Up Newcomer at the 2012 Canadian Comedy Awards, she rounds out my unintentional spotlight of East Coastian comedians (this was not planned). She was born and raised in PEI but now calls Toronto her home. She’s a genius at using 140 characters to throw shade at celebrities and makes me guffaw on a regular basis with her pop-culture referenced puns of glory.

She’s written for MTV Live, YTV and she’s a 1/3 of the drag supergroup, The Cheeto Girls. If you were to ask her what her biggest accomplishment has been in her life, she would not hesitate to tell you it was her 1994 win over Ryan Gosling in the Gladstone Public School’s annual lip-sync competition. I know this sounds like a joke, but it’s the legit truth.

Heidi will be doing stand-up at Egg Zeppelin with SPOOKEY RUBEN on Wednesday, Oct. 3rd, that’s THIS Wednesday. Go to there.

Make ‘Em Laugh!

Please press play:

With the conclusion of JFL42 behind me, I feel incomplete. The last two weeks were THE best because comedy was at the ultimate forefront of  my mind. I. Love. To. Laugh. I like to laugh loudly until it hurts. I like to make people laugh (hence this blog). I feel I need to give back to the community so this week will be strictly based around comedy in our fair city of Toronto, because trust me…there are goodies you don’t EVEN know about.

I will let you in on all my funny people crushes in this city – some I know, some I don’t…so this will get REAL weird if it gets back to them. But I regret nothing! *single blink* I will tell you what they do, where they perform, maybe even post a photo or 12! I will do the stalking for you so you don’t have to be uncomfortable at all.

How does ALL O’DIS relate to this blog? Well, for me, there’s nothing more attractive than someone’s ability to make me laugh. I will instantly fall for you/want to be your BFF if you can do this.  So I hope you enjoy what’s about to come this week and maybe I’ll see you at a show, where we will swoon and drool in solidarity.

“Hey Girl…laughter is the music of the soul, so let’s harmonize.” BOOM!

COMEDIANS!!!
